Tenuta di Ghizzano· Terre di Pisa
About the domain.
Tenuta di Ghizzano has belonged to the Venerosi Pesciolini family since 1370, six and a half centuries on the same hill in the Pisan countryside, west of the more famous Tuscan names. Ginevra Venerosi Pesciolini runs it now, and farms it organically.
Eighteen hectares, Sangiovese alongside the Bordeaux grapes, on clay and sand laced with marine fossils, the floor of an ancient sea. The two wines that matter are Veneroso and Nambrot; I tasted both at the estate.
This is not a trophy address, and that is precisely why I carry it. The wines drink with a directness the grander names sometimes lose.
Savory, deep.
Veneroso: 70% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Dried herbs, black olive, iron. Mediterranean character.
Full, earthy.
Nambrot: Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Darker than Veneroso, more extracted. Plum, leather, spice.
